Kuala
Gula, a fishing settlement in the Kerian District, is part of the Forest
Reserve, which is actually a mangrove swamp area.
This
well-preserve mangrove swamp has many species of mangrove trees including
"Avicennia spp" and "Rhizopora spp"
There
are approximately 166 species that can be found at one time in this protected
sanctuary. The numerous species include Mycteria Cinerea and the Laptopilos
Javanicus which are from Siberia.
Kuala
Gula is
also a stopover for various species of birds when they migrate from the
North to South Hemisphere especially from Siberia and Mongolia. They can
be seen in this area between the months of August till April the following
year.
These
birds migrate to avoid the bitter winter. Visitors to this area need clearance
from the Wild Reserve Department.
